Spot Prawn Season

4 May 2012 4,312 views No Comment

Epicureans rejoice! This week marks the opening of B.C.’s Spot Prawn season. Spot Prawns are harvested in our local waters and are considered a great catch for more than one reason. Not only are B.C. wild spot prawns extremely succulent, they are also sustainable.

You can check your menu, or at the market, to see if the daily catch is sustainable by looking for the Ocean Wise symbol.

Ocean Wise is Vancouver Aquarium’s conservation program which educates and enables consumers to make sustainable seafood choices. Ocean Wise works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to cover all aspects of harvesting from the ocean — from the fishing boat to the dinner table. There are over 450 Ocean Wise partners across Canada at more than 3,100 locations.

The Spot Prawn season kicks off this weekend with the 6th Annual Spot Prawn Festival at False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf just off Granville Island on May 5th. You can also find succulent Ocean Wise spot prawns, and other Ocean Wise delights, at these Vancouver restaurants.
