Who to Follow in Vancouver
Twitter is a great way to get connected in a new city, but there are so many Twitter accounts that finding the right accounts to follow can be overwhelming. We have put together a Twitter list of Vancouver’s most active and informative tweeters to help you easily tap into of our great city. These are just a few accounts to get you started. You can follow them individually or all at once in our list called Vancouver, but keep your eyes pealed for individuals interacting with these accounts as well—you might make some new friends.
News
@News1130radio will usually be the first to post breaking news on Twitter along with up to date traffic and weather reports. @CBCVancouver and @VancouverSun are both great reliable news sources for local, national or international news. If you prefer independent news sources try @TheTyee and @OpenFileVAN
Events, Attractions, Arts and Entertainment
@MyVancouver is the official account of Tourism Vancouver. It will keep you abreast of all the great things happening in the city from live music and gallery openings to special and seasonal events. For reviews, show times and news about arts @georgiastraight should keep you covered.
Dining
Because Vancouver has so many world class restaurants there are simply too many great spots to list here. However, here are a few award winning restaurants that are sure to please your pallet (They are also a few of our staff’s personal favourites): @SaltTastingRoom, @wildricebc, @Vijs_restaurant, @Campagnolomain, @1meatandbread, @MikuRestaurant
Travel
Check your travel plans with @YVRairport and @BCFerries before you go. Extreme weather can cause delays and it is always good to be prepared whether you are coming or going.
Public Transit
@Translink will respond to tweets about all bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus in the Lower Mainland. Tweet them if there are any major delays or problems on your route and they will tweet you back with personalized updates. However, if you just want to know when the next bus is coming, text you stop number to 33333 and you’ll get a quick response.
Sports
Sports fans can keep score with the official twitter accounts for Vancouver’s outstanding sports teams: @VanCanucks, @BCLions and @WhitecapsFC.
Social Shopping
There are countless social shopping sites all feature daily deals with huge savings in Vancouver, but why spend the time going to all of them when you can just go to one? Follow @teamfrugalbits for a list of all of Vancouver’s daily deals in one place.
History
Want to did deep and learn about Vancouver’s history and heritage? @VanArchives tweets out quirky historical facts and interesting old photos ofVancouver. Have a history question about a building or a neighbourhood? Tweet them! You might be surprised by what you hear back. @Museumofvan and @MOA_UBC are also great accounts and fun places to spend a day.
